The sector currently employs approximately 1000 researchers and support scientists.

Key players in Edinburgh are The Roslin Institute, the Moredun Research Institute, the Scottish Agricultural College, the University of Edinburgh’s Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

Europe’s Electronics & Software industry flourishes in Edinburgh City Region, at the heart of Silicon Glen in Scotland.

Scotland is at the forefront of optoelectronics globally. Edinburgh based companies have particular strengths in avionics, radar and laser systems, optical communications, spectroscopy and optical instruments and components.

Innovations include the world’s first underwater RF and broadband modems.

Scotland has long-standing expertise in Energy & Clean Tech and is endowed with some of the most favourable energy resources in Europe.

As a result the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors are incredibly dynamic in terms of innovation, development and diversification.

The city's universities are leading a number of multi-disciplinary research projects and training courses.

Scotland has an excellent record in Enabling Technologies including nanotechnology and microelectronics.

A research partnership forms the Institute of Integrated Systems (IIS). Complementary skills and technology capabilities, provides opportunities to address research topics that would not be possible on an individual basis.

The depth in academic research, its large pool of life science graduates and government investment in dedicated FDA-compliant faculties and bio-campuses has helped the sector grow into a thriving and diverse community.
