Now that summer’s here, things are starting to hot up here in
Edinburgh, and not just temperature wise. Whether you live here, or
are just visiting, there are oodles of things to help you pass the
time enjoyably. We’ve scoured them all to bring you a selection of
highlights of what’s on in Edinburgh this June.
This year’s Leith
Festival runs form 10-19 June, and with over 100 events all
located within 1 mile of the heart of Leith including theatre,
comedy, dance, visual art, music, films, sport and literature, it’s
a great way to discover more about the unique character of the
area.
A bit of Hollywood glamour comes to the streets of Scotland’s
inspiring capital from 15-26 June as the 65th Edinburgh International Film
Festival host a range of premieres,
including screenings of new movies featuring Ewan McGregor, Brendan
Gleason and Don Cheadle, as well as Philip Seymor Hoffman’s
directorial debut.
If
the Edinburgh Marathon wasn’t quite tough enough for you, then you
might well be brave (or foolish) enough to tackle what is arguably
Edinburgh’s toughest physical challenge on 19 June. The Seven Hills Race is a mixture
of road and hill running, cross country and urban orienteering,
covering more than 14 miles and over 2200 feet of ascent/descent.
There’s no course as such, just a series of checkpoints – how you
complete it is up to you!
Of course, if all that seems like hard work,
you could just try playing football in a bog instead. Nope, we’re
not joking – the Swamp
Soccer World Cup comes to Edinburgh for the first time from
25-26 June. It’s every as mental as it sounds, but great fun,
whether you’re playing or just spectating – don’t miss it.
And for those of you who think the Royal Highland Show is just
cattle-breeding and caber tossing, think again. Now in its
171st year, around 180,000 people are expected to flock
to this year’s event which takes place at Ingliston from 23-26 June
to celebrate all that’s good about Scotland’s farming, food and
countryside.
