February 2011 Edinburgh What's On Round-up
Now we’ve got January under our belts, 2011 is well under way
and we can look forward to all the fun that February in Edinburgh
promises.
Throughout the month of February, there are a whole series of
events taking places as part of Let’s Get Lyrical - a joint
collaboration between Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature and
Glasgow UNESCO City of Music celebrating song lyrics, with more
than 80 events over the course of the month featuring everything
from re-workings of top artists’ tracks to song-writing
workshops.
One of Edinburgh’s most loved picture houses, the Cameo Cinema, is offering the
chance to see a live screening of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, King
Lear, starring Derek Jacobi on 10 February. A co-production between
the National Theatre and the celebrated Donmar Warehouse, it’s
almost certain to be a massive success.
From 11 February, at the National Gallery, explore the
ability of some of Scotland’s greatest artists ‘to see ourselves as
others see us’, with self-portraits by the likes of Allan Ramsay,
Eduardo Paolozzi, Henry Raeburn and more.
As you’d expect from one of the most beautiful and romantic
cities in the world, there’s plenty happening on Valentine’s Day on
14 February. Check out the blog over at This
Is My Edinburgh for some suggestions to get you started.
And if you’re planning on marking the day by providing your
loved one with a ring, then keep your eyes peeled because later in
the week, they’ll be also coming up with some interesting ideas on
where in the city you could pop the question!
And if you need of a good giggle, then the king of the
one-liner, Jimmy Carr, comes to town with his new stand-up show
Laughter Therapy,
on at the Playhouse on 20 February – if you can get your hands
on a ticket that is!
