Sunshine on Leith, With A Bit Of Wind Thrown In, Thursday February 04 2010
When it comes to weather, Leith is
probably most synonymous with sunshine, but new a report
released this suggests that wind could well be challenging this
conception.
As Scotland looks to become leader in the provision of renewable
energies,
a Scottish Enterprise study suggests that Leith is the ideal place
to manufacture and construct the turbines needed for offshore
wind farms.
The report states that thanks to its location, Leith is ideally
situated to help supply proposed windfarms in the Firth of Forth,
the Moray Forth and Dogger Bank. As a result, 700 new jobs could be
created, along with the potential for thousands more in ancillary
positions – great news for Edinburgh and the surrounding area.
Perhaps citizens of Leith could also look to benefit from
glamorous tie-ins – twinning The People’s Republic with Chicago
(the city, not the musical), or maybe releasing an adaptation of
Edinburgh boy
Kenneth Grahame’s classic novel for instance.
It’s not that the
historic port is unfamiliar with wind, mind you. Let’s face it,
there’s always plenty of hot air spouted by both managers in the
run up to the Edinburgh
Derby.
