Fantastique news this week, as word came through that
the French government have dropped plans to close the French
Institute here in Edinburgh. The centre, which employs six
full-time staff and hosts everything from language classes to film
nights, had been threatened with closure due to financial
constraints, but thankfully, it has survived.
Obviously what happened was that Big Nicky S was pootling about
on the old interweb one night
looking for a new pair of shoes, stumbled across
our blog post bemoaning the potential closure instead, saw the
error of his ways and made amends. But we’re a bashful sort, we
don’t want to take all the credit. We’re sure all those people that
signed the petition and those that lobbied against it probably
helped a little too.
Really though, it’s great that the local folk showed their
support for something that adds a great deal of cultural nuance to
the capital. You’d think the French might have showed their
appreciation by having a word with Matthieu Bastareaud before
Les Bleus came to Murrayfield last weekend mind you.
