  • Edinburgh's Commie Pool: New and Improved!, Friday March 23 2012

For forty years the Royal Commonwealth Pool has been part of Edinburgh’s sporting landscape. During the last two years The City of Edinburgh Council has renovated and refurbished the Commie Pool to its former glory and future success. It will soon have the unique status of being the only venue in the world to host three Commonwealth Games (hosting the diving in the Glasgow 2014 Games).

    Edinburgh Commonwealth Pool

Construction firm Graham helped deliver a 21st century aquatic centre in an A-listed 20th Century building. The two and a half year programme has seen the building entirely stripped out and rebuilt whilst retaining all the listed features including 7,000m2 of the original timber ceiling panels!

At the City of Edinburgh Council’s official opening ceremony on 20th March David Wilkie MBE, Lord Provost George Grubb, Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Scott Hastings, sportscotland Chair Louise Martin all celebrated welcoming the Royal Commonwealth Pool back into Edinburgh’s sporting fold.

The ceremonial opening event included David Wilkie swimming a breadth with 30 local school children and a fabulous synchronised dive performance by Edinburgh Diving but the real celebration was opening the doors back to the public at 10am on Wednesday 21st March.

Your new and improved Commie Pool, managed by Edinburgh Leisure, has the largest and longest swimming pool in Edinburgh with eight 50metre lanes, with a boom to split it into two. Add two 25metre teaching and diving pools, there’s a lot of water, 5.5million litres in fact.

The gym has increased in size with over 70 pieces of new kit & plenty space for training along with 3 dedicated fitness studios for a whole host of classes.

For the youngsters Clambers’ adventurous, water themed softplay delivers fun on multiple levels. With a new self contained cafe area and warming station, baby change and toilets it’s convenient as well as fun.

  • Edinburgh enLIGHTens Once More, Friday February 10 2012

Prepare to be illuminated from the remaining dark days of winter as the very walls of the city of Edinburgh shine with the words of great poets. Projections of lines from famous poets of the Scottish Enlightenment are to be set across six city centre buildings on Rose Street and George Street which will have the Edinburgh city locations’ literary heritage speak to those living in and visiting Edinburgh.

    Enlighten Edinburgh Castle

The recently announced event, enLIGHTen, set as part of The Creative Year of Scotland 2012 program, will feature another first for Edinburgh City of Literature Trust as dynamic projection mapping is used to bring alive the culture, creativity and the architectural brilliance of Edinburgh city, not to mention to give inspiration about Scotland’s own Enlightenment.

By 1750 Scotland was amongst the most literate countries in Europe, with a culture orientated to books, and intense discussion, in Edinburgh’s clubs such as The Select Society, the Oyster Club, and The Poker Club. Not the card game, but the type of poker that set to enflame the Scots very own characteristic Enlightenment movement where empiricism, reason and practicality aimed to benefit the individual and society as a whole. Some notable Scottish shakers, movers, and thinkers of the time were the well known David Hume, Robert Burns, Adam Ferguson, Lord Kames and Adam Smith.

Scotland was set to question authority, question everything that was taken for granted, and to develop a unique branch of Humanism where even Voltaire would state “We look to Scotland for all our ideas of civilisation.” This is but the tip of the flame that made much of Europe and the rest of the world that bit brighter culturally, philosophically and scientifically.

With special funding from Creative Scotland, enLIGHTen will also offer specially commissioned site-specific pieces of micro-fiction to download in situ or remotely, creating a multi-sensory experience. The Edinburgh City Libraries have their Edinburgh Reads literary map available if you fancy a ramble round the inspirational cityscape; also, Edinburgh World Heritage offer some interesting podcasts on various locations of the city, including a good piece to brush up on the University and the Enlightenment itself.

Keep your eyes posted and be ready to read the walls of Edinburgh and hopefully see the very light of the Scottish Enlightenment ignite within!

Essential Edinburgh, Marketing Edinburgh, Edinburgh World Heritage, Northern Light, Pufferfish and JUMP Marketing are also co-partners.

  • Rock up your Running World with Edinburgh's Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon, Friday January 06 2012

April 15, 2012. 13.1 miles, 7000 runners and a band at each mile marker rocking you onEdinburgh Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon to the finish line in Holyrood Park... It’s the UK’s first Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon and it’s happening in Edinburgh. For those of you who have contemplated running but never quite seen the fun in it (like me!), this could be the event for you.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series began in 1998 and has inspired a transformation in the U.S. running scene by infusing running with music. Now “the World’s Largest Running Series”, more than 500,000 people participate across 26 North American cities each year. For the first time, the Series is venturing off of American soil and the Edinburgh half marathon is its first stop. The course takes in Holyrood Park, Portobello Promenade, the Meadows and the Grassmarket areas of the city and features live bands and DJs, entertaining water stations and cheer teams along the course. Participants can choose to raise money for any of the event’s charity partners:

    ·         Action Duchenne

    ·         Alzheimer Scotland

    ·         Friends of the Earth Scotland

    ·         Make-a-Wish-Foundation UK

    ·         The Stroke Association

If your charity is interested in becoming an event partner, email Red Hot Chilli Pipers Edinburghrnredinburgh@competitorgroup.com for information. Event organisers Competitor Group, Inc. are also on the lookout for local bands to play at the event; Red Hot Chilli Pipers are the first of 13 live bands to be confirmed with the remaining spots still to be filled. Bands can submit entries at http://uk.competitor.com/edinburgh/entertainment. It’s a great opportunity for local bands to get their music heard by an international audience, as runners are expected from all over the world!

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh Half Marathon replaces the existing ADT Edinburgh Half Marathon which has now been rebranded having run annually for 6 years. Registration costs £43 and is available at http://uk.competitor.com/edinburgh/register. Participants receive a T-shirt, finisher’s medal, swag bag and free admission to the Finish Line Festival and Post Race Concert.

  • The Edinburgh Mela 2011, Friday September 02 2011

Just as you thought the festival fun in Edinburgh was dying down, along comes another event to keep it all going that little bit longer – aren’t you lucky, lucky people? Down at Leith Links this weekend (2-4 September) you’ll find the Edinburgh Mela, Scotland’s biggest intercultural festival.

Way back in another century (1995 to be exact), the festival was started in order to showcase the talents of Edinburgh’s various ethnic communities, and the weekend event now regularly attracts more than 20,000 visitors.

Music plays a huge role in the Edinburgh Mela, and the variety of styles and genres is incredible. This year alone there’s samba and taiko drumming, beatboxing, rap, Turkish folk, Nepalese blues-rock, Senegalese soul, gospel, bhangra and Sufi, as well as an appearance from MOBO award winner Raghav.

Featuring everything from dance and theatre to food and fashion too, there’s plenty to see and do. But whatever you decide to get up to, make sure you check out the breathtaking skills of the performers at the Kawa Circus as well.

  • To Infinity and Beyond! Well, the Edge of Space at Least, Friday February 11 2011

Last week, we brought you news of some terrific bargains available with one of the city’s top clothing boutiques, but this week, Edinburgh’s home to an offer that’s literally out of this world!

SpaceThat’s because a Leith travel agent has become the country’s only ‘Space Agent’. The aptly-named Dream Escape will be selling spaceflights with Virgin Galactic, the brainchild of tycoon Sir Richard Branson, which will offer private individuals the chance to venture into space. There’s been no confirmation yet of what the duty-free allowance is, but it’s sure to beat a bottle of perfume and an extra-large Toberlone.

Worldwide, around 400 people have signed up for the two-hour flight on board SpaceShipTwo, which will take off from Spaceport America in New Mexico. The trip also includes around 6-10 minutes of weightlessness. We’re guessing sickbags are provided. They certainly should be considering the cost - at £125,000 a pop, it’s certainly not cheap, but with the first flight not due to leave for two years, there’s still time to get saving. Just don’t forget to check down the back of the sofa...

  • Student Insider Guide - Edinburgh's Art Scene - by Rachael Cloughton, Wednesday January 12 2011

Our first in a series of blog posts written by students in Edinburgh...

When the Turner Prize was announced last month, art students gathered outside the Tate in a protest against rising tuition fees and cuts to the arts. Various chants echoed about the building’s peripheries whilst Susan Philipsz made her acceptance speech, but the overall message was clear: it’s a tough time to be an art student.

The ‘struggling artist’ stereotype is one with a long history, but does adversity really National Gallery of Scotlandbreed creativity? Edinburgh’s art scene certainly testifies as much. Amidst the unrest it remains one of the city’s finest attractions, particularly the grassroots organisations run by students and recent graduates that continue to thrive despite difficulties.

The non-profit art collective, Rhubaba  recently expanded to Leith and along with extra studio spaces, they now boast a ‘project space;’ providing the city with a new platform for emerging talent. Hannah James is exhibited between the 23rd -30th January.

Line; an art magazine based in Edinburgh and dedicated to publishing both emerging and established writers, issued a list of international stockists for its third issue. A celebratory performance is scheduled for the 15th January at Inspace.

Even perennial student hangouts, the Embassy and Forest Cafe have refused to go down without a fight and on the brink of homelessness. Rumour is that Embassy will be moving to Broughton Street and their Salon-style Members show remains scheduled to open on the 21st January. The Forest is fundraising to stay on site with an extensive programme of music and art events that can be accessed via their website.
When the going gets tough, the tough really do get going…to parties, galleries and performances. Want to help save the arts too? Thought so.....

  • Estonia? Isn't That The Little Restaurant Just Off Leith Walk?, Sunday October 03 2010

Ask the average person in the street what they know about Estonia, and it’s likely they’ll come up with one of the following: Skype was invented there, they once refused to show up for a fitba match against Scotland, and, well, that’s about it. Oh, wait – didn’t they win Eurovision about 10 years ago?

Edinburgh airportWell, we needn’t be ignorant for much longer, because very soon it’ll be much easier to acquaint ourselves with the little Baltic state. It was announced last week that from January, Ryanair will be running a new direct service to the Estonian capital, Tallin with the flights operating from Edinburgh Airport three days a week on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

A fantastic mix of the old and new, Tallin is a beautiful city. It’s also been named European Capital of Culture 2011 which is an added bonus. And for those of you that hate to drag themselves away from Edinburgh, it even has something to make you feel a little less homesick – a castle which towers over the city.

  • Archers in the Gardens. Kevin Costner Not Spotted,Yet, Saturday September 18 2010

Archery Head down to East Princes Street Gardens this weekend, and you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled onto the film set of the sequel to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

For, amidst the trees and bushes, everywhere you look you’ll see archers arching (or whatever it is they do), performing extraordinary feats of accuracy with their bows and arrows. This isn’t the movies however – it’s real life, and the archers are here to participate in the World Cup Final.

It’s the biggest ever archery event to take place in the UK, with the planet’s top 32 competitors going head to head to be crowned champion. Obviously, the fact that these are athletes at the top of their sport and not just extras dressed in tights is a fairly important distinction to point out. Well, that and the fact there will be no bad acting, epic chart-topping rock ballads, or Kevin Costner. Shame really.

  • Leith Festival Underway. Non-Leithers Welcome, Sunday June 13 2010

The citizens of the People’s Republic of Leith are extra lucky – not only do they get to share in all of theLeith Festival wonderful festivals that happen uptown, they also get their very own festival, which kicked off at the weekend.

With 150 events in 50 different venues within a 1 mile radius, The Leith Festival, which runs until June 20th, features everything from comedy to sport, with theatre, music, film and a whole lot more thrown in.

Highlights include a screening of the film Wedding Belles, written by one of Leith’s favourite sons, Irvine Welsh, a HipHop showcase presented by Pedro Solenoid and the intriguing period history theatre show The Siege of Leith.

Don’t worry though – those lovely Leithers don’t keep all the goodness to themselves - they’re happy for the rest of us to venture down, so make sure you do just that.

  • It's Festival Time!, Saturday June 12 2010

Dizzee RascalWoohoo! Can you smell that? Oh yeah, that’s Eau De Festival. No, it’s not Britney’s new fragrance, it’s actually the excitement generated by the launch of this year’s Fringe Festival, and it’s contemporary music strand, The Edge. Dizzee Rascal, Alan Cumming and Clark Peters, star of the joint-best TV show ever in the history of the universe ever, The Wire (tied with Eldorado, just in case you are wondering) are just some of the big-name acts who will be appearing at the 64th Fringe Festival.

With almost 2,500 different shows to get through in just 25 days, you might struggle to see them all, so you’ll probably be looking for some tips on what to see eh? What’s that? Don’t look at us for cultural tips – we think Eldorado was fantastic. Oh, ok then.

Our sources are telling us that two of the must see shows are some of the most hard-hitting dramas on the 2010 line-up; The Emma Thompson-produced Fair Trade about sex trafficking in Britain, and Unfinished Business, a one man play about the Lockerbie bombing. But you better get your skates on, because tickets won’t be available for long.

  • Hear, Hear - What a Great Idea, Saturday May 15 2010

Social SphereAh, speech bubbles. Where would be without them? Favoured by everyone from Garfield to Batman, they’re the staple of comic strips the world over.

But thanks to an enterprising Product Design student at Edinburgh Napier, (which was recently ranked in the top ten Universities in the UK for Design) soon it might not just be our cartoon friends using them. 23 year-old Elaine McLuskey has come up with an interesting new way to make yourself heard above the din in busy public spaces, and her acoustic ‘social spheres’ wouldn’t look out of place in the city’s trendiest nightspots.

It’s just one of the many new products on show this at the university’s School of Arts and Creative Industries Degree Show. Featuring projects by Design, Photography and Film and Creative Advertising students, there’s a whole host of innovative work on show, including a sensory table, flat pack lights, a dinosaur which monitors the amount of time children spend on their computer and a bottle which can be split into a beer and wine glass.

You can pop along and see them all for yourself, as the Degree Show takes place at the Merchiston Campus until 23rd May.

  • Sculpting with Sand? No, Not Gaudy - It's Gaudi, Thursday May 13 2010

Castle Street will become Sand-Castle Street next week (17-22 May) thanks to Spanair. To celebrate their new Edinburgh-Barcelona route, they'll be building a sand sculpture in the shadow of our very own Edinburgh Castle. But this won't be any ordinary sandcastle. Oh no. They've roped in Scottish artist Kate Robinson to sculpt a huge installation which will feature landmarks from both cities.

    Kate Robinson - Sandcastle

The new route commences on May 21st, with five flights a week, great news for Edinburgh residents who fancy a spot of sunshine, and for the local economy, what with all the extra tourists it'll bring to Auld Reekie. It should help business links too - especially given that by the end of the year it's expected that 30,000 passengers will have flown between the two cities – and an additional 11,000 passengers between Edinburgh and Madrid.

But of course, the real fun in building a sandcastle is knocking it down - which is where you lot come in. Not only do you get to stand and admire the artwork, but if you register first, then are one of the first 100 people to arrive for the sculpture's unveiling on Saturday 22 May at 10am, you will get the chance to root around in the sand to try and find one of 100 flight tickets to Barcelona hidden within.

For your chance to win, you must make sure you're registered here before heading to Castle Street. Just don't forget to set your alarm clock.

  • Fresh Face for Edinburgh West - Zoo Welcomes New Addition, Friday May 07 2010

The West of Edinburgh woke up to welcome an unusual face replacing the previous incumbent and taking on a prominent role in the community today, but we’re not talking about the new MP. Going by the name of Samir, he’s only 18 months old, travelled all the way from Germany and had to complete the last of his journey by crane. rhino

Confused? Well, perhaps we should explain – Samir is a one-horned Indian Rhinoceros and is the latest addition to the line-up at Edinburgh Zoo. He takes over the reins from the Zoo’s current Rhino, six-year old Fandidra, who’s heading off to take part in a breeding program. Lucky blighter.

Samir’s arrival is not the only interesting thing happening at the Zoo this weekend though. As part of World Migratory Bird Day, visitors can take part in a series of special free talks designed to raise awareness about the plight of under-threat migratory bird species, while over at the penguin enclosure, there are some more fresh faces - newly-hatched gentoo penguin chicks.
